Hi,a

I have a 6 month old Australorp that has not started to lay yet. She is a large girl who eats grain and treats & drinks well but spends the majority of her day in one spot - often asleep. She is usually apart from the other 3 hens (Sussex, Silver Dorking, Ancona). While the Sussex is laying I have not observed any pecking or deliberate isolation - in fact she is the biggest hen of the four. They free range often yet she will stand back and not get involved in preening or dust baths that the others do.

Thoughts please

Are you feeding a balanced chicken feed, layer, or all flock feed? Do you put out some granite poultry grit for digestion and some crushed oyster shell for calcium? How does her crop feel first thing in the morning before she eats or drinks? Is she eating normally? Do you have any pictures of her or her droppings? Are the others bully her? How often is she laying, and have you seen any soft or abnormal egg shells?
