Lethargic, drooping head, slow breathing, then dying.

I have a small flock of 15 mixed chickens and 4 ducks. All but 3 chickens are recent additions from a friends small holding circa 2 weeks ago. All are laying Age hens seemingly in healthy condition.

Three days ago, two of them started looking sick, droopy head, lethargic, within 48hrs they were collapsed and not responding with very slow breaths. They have just died. There was no change in their weight, feathering or poop beforehand.

Two more have now just started showing signs of droopy head.

PS we live in Jordan so specific meds might not be available. But any ideas appreciated.

So sorry to hear this! This is another example of the importance of quarantining any additions before adding to you existing flock. There is no telling where they contracted this bug, but now there are more variables in the equation. I would give electrolytes, apple cider vinegar works, in their water and look into some local remedies to help them fight this. Praying for the best!

Thanks for the ideas.

The local vet has given them something. No idea what!! Trying to work out with them in Arabic is a little challenging :) And asking where to get apple cider vinegar did not translate at all for them :) We will keep an eye on them and see if we get any improvements.

Coccidiosis would be something to consider with new chickens on new soil. Were there any signs of respiratory illness, such as watery, bubbly eye, nasal drainage, crackles or wheezes, or gasping? Was there a change in feed, very hot temperatures, no shade, or any mold in feed?

Thanks for replying.

No issues with the eyes. Breathing was slow and laboured, nothing else with breathing. Before they collapsed, they were leaning either against the wall or water trough and not moving, even when approached. There has been an increase in temperature, 80 to 90 Fahrenheit, 30-35 celcius. They have shade. Feed seems fresh and clean.

We have apple cider vinegar with the mother here. Not sure of the Arabic translation. Doğal elma sirkesi in Turkish. Look at health food stores and even at the open air vegetable markets. They sometimes make it to sell. Good luck with your flock!
