I have a 4 y/o hen that , for two days now, has been off to herself along side either a fence or a building, her gait is a little off, and her vent is messy. I haven’t seen her take much food, though I have seen her drink. Her eyes and nose are clear and her breathing seems normal. I can’t see any signs of injury either. She doesn’t want me near her. So if I’m going to handle her I want to have some idea as to what I’m going to do/ look for. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Is she molting or has she been laying eggs recently? How does her crop feel—empty and flat, full firm, doughy, or puffy soft? Is it emptying by morning? Has she lost weight? Is there any fullness to how lower belly between her legs? Is her tail up or down? Have you checked her for lice or mites on her skin? Have you wormed recently? I would offer some scrambled egg or tuna, and add a bit of water to a small bowl of her chicken feed.
