My hen June, (2 year old RIR) has not felt well for nearly a week. I admitted her into to the hospital on Monday that we keep ready in our basement. She is drinking and eating a little bit. She'll eat a little bit of the treats I give her; scrambed egg, grapes and little bits of canned corn, she also has layer crumbles she pecks at. I added Sulmet to her drinking water thinking that she might have an infection of some sort. She perked up after a day of this treatment, so I let her outside with her friends (she wanted out), but then she started looking bad again, she is quite lethargic, so she was admitted back in to the hospital. She has yellowish/white runny stools that are sticking to her rear end feathers. I bath her every day and have even trimmed away some of her feathers in an effort to keep her cleaner. I am wondering if there could be something wrong with her kidneys? Does anyone have any advice. I just love her and she's become one of my favorites.

As far as I can tell - this is not egg related as she shows no symptoms of trying to lay at all or wanting to lay for that matter.

No other hen is sick at all.

Thanks.

I too have had a similar problem this week with one of my girls and posted this two days ago:

So far, I haven't had any info, so I'm going to track your post to see if there's any advice for you!

Yesterday, mine was up and moving slightly, today she's hunched back down on the ground...

Thank you! I'll visit your thread right now.

I do not think my hen's problem is egg related. I hope not anyway because I just lost a hen back in May from being egg bound. This hen has totally different symptoms.

Good luck to you, I hope your hen gets better soon.

I'm not sure I would have treated with sulmet with no diagnosis of an illness that responds to sulmet. Did you have the yellowish poop prior to using sulmet? Yellowish poop usually means worms. Have you wormed recently?

These are suggested questions to answer (from the sticky):

Give us the following information. The more you tell us, the better we will be able to help you.

1) What type of bird , age and weight.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
6) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
8 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
9) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
10) Describe the housing/bedding in use
