Hi all,
Today I was visiting the chickens and one of my hens is extremely lethargic- I was putting them out in the garden so they could have a scratch around and she didn’t run from me when I tried to pick her up (extremely unusual). Upon further inspection She has yellow poo dried on her bottom. She won’t move but she will eat- I have her watermelon and she’s eating it slowly in little bites. Does anyone know what this could be? How do I remove the pop from her bottom?
Thanks in advance
Alex

Can you tell us how old she is, and if she has been laying eggs? I would clean the droppings off of her vent area to keep flies and maggots off. Runny poops can be from many different causes. She could have coccidiosis or she may have a reproductive issue or infection. I would give her some water with electrolytes, and try to find some Corid at your feed store. You could treat her for possible coccidiosis by giving 2 tsp of Corid liquid per gallon of water for 5-7 days. If she has not been wormed recently, you get some droppings checked by your vet for both worms or coccidiosis. A reproductive infection is hard to diagnose. Swelling in the lower abdomen might be a sign. Check her crop to make sure that it is emptying. If it is full in the morning, and hard or puffy, she may have a crop disorder.
