Lethargic Hen

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You've gotten some good suggestions above. Have you given her an all over physical exam, what does her vent look like etc. What breed is she. If they are just six months old, are you sure she specifically was laying? Do you know what powder you were treating them with for several weeks or months?

If you are seeing a lot of blood in the poop, then coccidiosis is no doubt the cause. You would want to get some Corid (Amprolium) from the feed store. It is used for 5 to 7 days and will take care of cocci.

When and how often you worm really depends on a few things....you clean your facilities are, how many birds you have, if they free range, if you have added new birds from unknown sources to your flock recently. And it also depends on what you are worming with. I have had great luck with Safeguard Liquid Goat Wormer. It takes care of most all worms in the birds body with the exception of a few species of tapeworms. Tapes are not all that common. Valbazen will take care of every worm then have. Once or twice a year is good for free ranged birds or birds kept in crowded spaces.

Don't wait too long if you are seeing blood in the stool. Cocci can kill fast. So can an impaction of worms.

Good luck and I hope you can get her back to good health soon.

Hello,
Thank you for your response
Update on my hen, I dewormed all of the chickens including the sick hen. Over a week ago. Still no improvement with her in fact she has become worse she is not eating on her own keeps her eyes closed she can't walk or she looses her balance and falls over. I have been hand feeding her for days, moistened chicken feed. She is in the house where it is warm. I checked her vent it does not have an egg in it (has not laid one since in the house)she doesn't have mites or any vissable external parasite. I feel awful for her and I am surprised she has held in for this long!

Is there any chance of going to a vet? I understand if it's not possible.

Also, I'm dealing with a hen that isn't eating or drinking on her own and we've had to tube feed for the past few days. We'll be going to a vet tomorrow to see what's going on. Have you tried tube feeding? I shyed away at first, but Kathy (casportpony) really helped me with this. She has videos and a thread in her signature box that was very informational.

Did you ever try treating for cocci? I hope your hen can start to get better.

Thank you for your response! I feed her with a syringe, chicken feed that I watered down into a soft paste. She does well with eating it. I just added a poultry cell oral vitamin into it.
The whole vet thing....it is not financially an option. I do adore her and all the others but I can't pour the others food and care budget into 1 sick hen. :(

I understand that completely. I would have never believed this until I listened and tried it but tube feeding is really making a difference here. It was surprising just how much water and feed one hen needs. I couldn't find a vet to sell me the items but I found what I needed at the local farm supply store. It might help her if she's not getting enough nutrients. No matter what you decide I hope your hen gets better.

Thank you!
I hope your hen gets well too! If you could keep me updated on what the vet says I would appreciate it. It sounds like the symptoms out hens have are pretty similar. They will prob run some blood work and want a stool sample.
Good luck!
