Hey everyone! When I got home from work today I noticed my sweet Hailey (golden comet) seemed lethargic. She was just standing in one spot. When I pet her she stood still which is very unlike her. She is my feisty girl! She laid a perfect egg today and seemed fine this morning. I decided to separate her so I can monitor for the night. She keeps pulsating her vent/abdomen and I saw a tiny drip of clear fluid that dripped down her bottom. I've been researching and it sounds like this could be a variety of things. Does anyone have experience with this? Are there any other symptoms I should keep an eye out for? Thanks!

How is she doing today?
She may have had a soft shell egg that she was trying to pass? The clear fluid, did it seem like egg white? Soft shell/shell less eggs can be hard to expel, so I would keep watch on her.
If she is not too lethargic, a warm epsom salts bath may help relax her a bit.

I had a hen that hard a hard time with this for over a year, but sadly I had to put her down this week. When she was having trouble, I gave her extra calcium (crushed Tums or 1/2 tab Caltrate)-usually over a little scrambled egg and Poultry Nutri-Drench (1cc per 3lbs of weight). Every once in a while I would soak her, but normally with the Calcium and Vitamins she would expel the egg fairly quickly (the same day).

See if this looks familiar as far as the discharge goes https://hencam.com/henblog/2015/08/a-laying-glitch/

I would also monitor the crop for a couple of days, making sure it is empty every morning before she eats/drinks.

Thank you for the reply! Yes she did lay a soft shell egg. I've not had any hens do that before. Shes acting like her normal bossy self now
48 hours later she laid a very large egg which I'm wondering if it's a double yolk. In your experience, is this more common in certain breeds than others?

Glad to hear she is doing better!

Some high productions breeds/hybrids like Golden Comets are known to have reproductive disorders, but honestly, any breed can develop problems. I do believe that genetics play a role though.

My beautiful girl has been doing this for a couple of weeks! Now she is going into hiding in "the Dark Room", which is a board she can go behind. She does the same exact thing and I walked into the coop to see the rest feasting on an egg on the floor. It was gone before I could even check it. I have no meds for my chix and not much infrastructure in my house which is one room. The chix have two and their place is bigger than mine! I love this gal. What should I do? She just puffs up and stands still for hours.. nearly got run over today! They are free range so I have no clue if she is laying more of these eggs.

I'm sorry she is not doing well.

She may be having some reproductive problems. It sound like she may have expelled a soft shell egg today?
Give her a good going over looking for lice/mites, see if her crop empties overnight and feel the abdomen for bloat/swelling or fluid.

Try to get a look at her poop.

You can try soaking her in a warm epsom salts bath to see if that soothes her a little.

Unfortunately, she died yesterday. She had bugs, so I dosed her with DE and as I was getting it to all the places, found she had a broken breastbone! She died last night. I loved Fuzzbutt! She laid the best beautiful green eggs I have ever tasted! I have looked everywhere to see what breed she was and can't find her. I used to call her Wolfgirl, because she kinda has the look. She is brown and so well camouflaged you can walk right over her and not see her. It was hard to find her eyes when looking at her. She was black around the eyes and behind her head. Oh, I miss her! She was the only one of my birds that will let me hold her.
