Yes, you should work with them a lot before riding, try and get them to come and follow you. Then have it get used to you on its back, you can put a pad on him if he has a really boney back. That is great! Sounds like you just have to get him comfortable with you on his back and wait till he is older to support more weight than just himself. Ours wouldn't eat grass you gave him.
