After a year of raising a small flock for our own personal eggs, I've been bitten by the chicken bug and am ready to expand the operation. I'm planning on getting some stock of a few high-quality purebred lines for selling hatching eggs and chicks, as well as working to get the lines as close to the SOP as possible. Just three breeds right now to start, but might expand later if things go well.

My question is, what's the best way to set this up? I have the space, but would prefer not to create three completely separate coop/runs. Any ideas for building a larger coop that can hold and multiple breeds, as well as decent sized runs to keep them separated?

Thanks!

I divided the coop and also divided the run. I have 2 parallel flocks, each with their own entrance to the divided coop. The dividers don’t need to be as bomb proof as the outside fencing.

Do you ever have any issues with roosters trying to fight through the fence and getting injured? I know that can be a problem with gamefowl, but wasn't sure if it was the case with "normal" breeds as well?

I had a cockerel with the pullet flock and he and the adult rooster would kind of jump at each other thru the fence. They didn’t actually injure each other. But I culled the cockerel, so he’s no more. You can put smaller mesh between areas if that’s a problem. 1” plastic mesh would suffice.
