Let's share our chicken decor!

Thanks all!

Yes, Crows and Ravens will swarm hawks as do Blue Jays. If you learn their language, you will know there is a hawk present. So many times when I am inside the house here and the chickens are outside, I will hear the Ravens using their "Hawk!" calls and sure enough there is a hawk circling nearby. I am sure they have unknowingly saved my flock on many occasions.

This has been interesting about crows. I need to learn more about them.

Off to see some chickens now, you all have a good morning!

LOL....how lucky you are to have crows at your feeders! No crows down here, lots of Ravens though.

Crows recognize faces. If you can win them over with positive experiences from you, you will earn their trust. Crows have learned to become very leary of humans anymore as they are considered pests and people go on these crow shoots. (horrible) And they all know it too. So you may have to work with them for a while.

Crows are really fond of cracked corn and sunflower seeds. You might put tray out just for them. Do they stay and watch you fill the bird feeders? If they do, you might talk to them, quickly look but not stare at them, and slowly put the tray down telling them this is for them. They are VERY smart and will learn that tray is just for them. My Ravens know exactly what food is for them and what food is for the wild birds and when attempting to steal the wild bird seed will sneak and hide from me knowing they are doing bad things. LOL

I'm sure crows are around this area most of the time, but infrequently come to the bird feeder. I don't have the link, but one of the Universities (Cornell, I think) has an interactive bird sound feature, it is amazing to see how many sounds the crows make, and we hear them quite often. And see them chase hawks away all the time.

I used to play golf, and they would steal honey buns, sandwiches, bags of chips or try to pick up your drink by the straw when we were only a few feet out of those carts. LOL.

Yes, Corvids, which include Crows, Ravens and Jays do have quite an extensive language. They make many different sounds to communicate with each other. Covids are incredibly smart and are now up there with the intelligence of Apes, surpassing them in certain tests!

Crows especially are opportunistic feeders and do rely on humans for finding food. I would imagine the golf course is a great place to find a meal. Ha!

Are you saying Blue Jays are related to Crows and Ravens? I would never have guessed that... Fascinating, thanks for info.

I do think most birds are tremendously smarter than they are given credit.

Yes, they love the great opportunities on the golf courses and bet the crow would have beat me driving or putting.

@sunflour my "golf" is limited to the putt putt variety but I always thought it would be fun to learn how to play the real deal.

Learning is fun, early days the "hit and giggles" are even more fun. But when ya get too serious, then you have to make a change and raise chickens

Yeah, maybe I should stick with chickens.

Don't know if I'd be up to playing with DH anyway. He used to be a golf course superintendent and played quite a bit. Golf might not be a good relationship-building exercise (all that yelling you know, lol).

here here...me too! My father was huge on golfing all is life and played on leagues and all even into his late 70's. When I was young he would take me to the driving ranges in hopes his daughter would be a carbon copy of her daddy.....it never happened. Ha!
