we couldn't be happier with our 2 Black Australorps, Daisy and Clementine. We raised them from week old chicks and they have been so wonderful. It took awhile for them to start laying, around 22 weeks, but they have been faithful,5-6 eggs per week ever since. I did some research on breeds before we bought our chicks and I was pleased with everything I read about them and it was all true- they make great egg-laying pets!

Let's see more Australorps!!

I absolutely adore my australorps. I ordered 2 pullets but accidentally got one roo.

Dora in one of her favorite places. (I used to have open nest boxes, but some of the girls decided to lay elsewhere so I made curtains to make more of an individual nest box setting. Ever since, they've all been laying in the right spot!)

And Lucifer (AKA Lucy)

Sadly, I may have to rehome Lucy. He's a lot bigger than my easter eggers, and their backs are looking a bit bare. I've ordered some saddles, so we'll see how that does. He's the biggest sweet heart. I can carry him like a baby and we walk around the neighborhood (eliciting some curious stares). Not to mention what a great free range roo he is. Pays lots of attention to his surroundings and has even taken on a cat to protect his hens. (The cat was sitting on a fence so Lucy jumped on the fence, sneaked up on the poor kitty, then knocked it off the fence into a yard of chihuahuas. Don't worry, the cat was fine. It jumped back up the fence and onto the nearest roof immediately afterward.) I wish I could let them free range more.

Too many predators though.

This pic you can see she is the leader of the flock practially since my roosters got something wrong with his foot.
