Hi there!
I am new to the group and new to chickens. In fact, we get our chicks from a school project on Friday. They were hatched so we are hoping for some hens. I want to drop a letter to two neighbors behind us and let them know - any suggestions of what to write? Will share eggs? Also, what happens if we get a rooster or two? We cannot keep them where we are zoned in Los Angeles. If anyone has any local ideas, I would love to be proactive. Thanks!

Welcome to BYC. If you are legally allowed to have chickens where you live, I would not announce it to neighbors. There is always at least one party-pooper in the bunch that doesn't want anyone to enjoy life. Roosters are very difficult to place, everyone is trying to get rid of some. Sometimes the seller will take them back and hopefully trade you a "real" pullet. You have to accept that someone taking roosters will generally do so for the free meal. That's the name of the game.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Drumstick has left you some great advice on your chickens. I too would not announce it to them and if you do end up with a roo you could try to rehome them. I hatch quite a bit and once I know for sure they are Roos they get 2 weeks of being advertised free to good home. If they do not find new homes by then I'm afraid they are culled. I know this may sound harsh but I know they have had a good home and been well looked after. The end is quick and they don't end up in unscrupulous hands. I'm afraid all this is part of hatching and having straight run chicks.

Wishing you the very best of luck with your new venture, I hope you end up with pullets.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Thanks to you both! Totally get it with the roosters... I like the idea is advertising but also looking into alternatives. We have live meat shops in Los Angeles. Plan B.

glad you have joined us and hope you do get all pullets. But honestly 50% of straight run hatches are male.

Sounds like you have plans for possible roos, so just wanted to add my opine to the neighbor notification. Unless you are already friends with the neighbors don't announce it and don't promise eggs, you will want all of those yourself :)

Have fun, the chicks do grow so fast.

When they are older you can post pics under what breed/gender to get some input on boys vs girls.

Welcome to BYC!!! In a way drumstick diva is right. If its legal, go ahead and do it. Somebody could object and if you do it after they object then it looks like you just didn't really care what they said. I would build the coop, and then chat with them weeks later and drop that you got chickens. Offering eggs is a nice gesture too. My neighbors love the eggs, and we always have kids or grand kids of neighbors coming to pet chickens. More people keep getting chickens here now, and I rightly take credit as the founder of chicken keeping on the block!!
