Our city council is looking at changing our ordinance to allow backyard chickens but of course, they are getting opposition letters. The supporting members have asked to have current and past chicken owners write to council about their positive experiences with backyard chickens. I can provide you those email addresses, would anyone be willing to send in an email to help us? And, just to be a bit pushy, does anyone have neighbors that would be willing to email council?

Thanks for your help

I am looking for support from current chicken owners outside the city to help sway council that chickens should be legal. Thanks!

Why would the opinions of non-constituents sway the city council members? They SHOULD NOT. I know that if my city council was being swayed by non-residents' opinions I would be HIGHLY UPSET.

It is one thing to elicit expert information from a non-resident, but something else to elicit opinions.

They want to hear first hand from people who have chickens and they can't hear from residents because it's illegal right now for residents to have chickens. Other than non-resident chicken owners, I don't know who else would be an expert on backyard chickens. Do you know someone who is a backyard chicken expert?

Are you in Michigan? If so, have you presented your town council with a copy of the Michigan Right to Farm Act? That document tends to make local governments sit up and take notice. I agree that letters should be from your town's constituents, but it doesn't hurt to point out other cities in your state that have recently changed their ordinances to allow chickens (Ann Arbor and Lansing in Michigan for example). Good Luck!
