We could have a few chickens where we are planning on moving!

I may be able to keep a few and at least have eggs for us. I currently have a pregnant milk goat that is due in March, but I'll have to leave her behind as well. Maybe within a couple of years we'll have enough saved up to actually buy our own place for animals, but in the meantime, maybe you're right and we need to look at this as a little detour on our journey.

as you said, just a bump in the road, take this time to regroup but dont give up. It may not be next year it may not be for quite a few but i can guarantee that if you work hard and keep your goals in mind you will get that farm you want

Good Luck

Agree with all the advice you've been given so far. Although this may be a setback, you now have the opportunity to make new choices and new goals. Keeping a few chickens is a great start. Grow some of your own food, even if it's just a small plot or pots on a patio. Live below your means, save up for those dreams.

It does seem to be extremely hard to make it in agriculture alone. You need land, time and money to go big. But by starting small, and continually working toward your dreams, you'll get there eventually.

Best of luck to you!

I'm so sorry to hear of your difficulties. I would like to offer you a place to house some of your "flock" I need some new DNA in my flock anyway. Are your birds banded? Please feel free to contact me at Perfection Aviary, 828-774-7377, I'm not that far from SC. You could get your birds moved to a new coop and I can help you with that. Yours Faithfully, S.D. Smith

here is my advice. I'm sure it will be more blunt than the other nicer folks here, but no less heartfelt, just the same.

1. since you are young, giving up on a life style dream is silly. stay with it. You two have the rest of your lives to get to your dream
2. work. get a job, get two jobs, and save every bit that you can.
3. live cheap. when my first wife and I were planning our future, we lived for a year, in an RV park. rent was cheap, and the retired folks that stayed in the park, were amazing and extremely helpful. It was a great community vibe. We were able to save a huge amount of money in that time.
4. look for smaller acreages, that are nestled inside of a larger property. This will allow you to buy a few acres, and possibly lease the other land for cattle.
5. build small, or even better yet, build a barn first. live in the barn. you'd be surprised at how little living space you actually need. remember it's about the dream, not the short term circumstances.
6. live small. this will allow you to continue to save while you are adjusting to the new place. as you can afford it, purchase adjoining acres.

I'm sure you've come to understand, by your small taste of it, the agri life, isn't glorious. You won't get rich, rather you will be richer. Enoy getting there. every bruise, every sore muscle, every hardship, it's the journey to the dream, as much as the dream. No dream worth having is ever gotten easily. learn to be ok with that, and struggle, fight, and constantly work towards the final goal. Lastly, remember you two are a team, and when working together towards the common goal, ya'll can be an unstoppable force. don't consider roadblocks, or bumps, an end to the dream, but rather another opportunity, to learn, grow, and toughen up.
