I have been raising Khaki Campbells since I started with chickens, nearly two years. I wanted ducks before I wanted chickens.
Well I now have a good customer base for my farm and everyone is asking about duck meat.
I have a small farm with big plans. I don't have the space for two full duck flocks for meat and eggs.
I did some research and decided that the Saxony duck sounded the perfect dual purpose duck for me and my customers.
Which means selling my Khakis.
Today a nice couple is coming out to buy my gorgeous KC drake and his 4 hens. He is show quality and so are three of his hens. I have shown them.
I am keeping 4 ducks, all hens. A Pekin, two runners, and a half runner/half Khaki. The half runner/khaki hen was hatched with a pure khaki hen and they have been together since eggs, little Pudge (the runner/khaki) is pacing back and forth on the side of the run closet to the pen quacking and looking nervous. I hope she can be without Bob The Builder (the khaki hen she hatched with, my 3 year old named her).
The drake is my pride and joy. He is beautiful, friendly, and just everything I wanted in a duck from day one.
I am on pins and needles and this morning when I removed them from the run and put them into a pen for viewing this afternoon, I was tearing up a little. My husband is asking me why I'm doing this if I love them so much and I've told him that ultimately it's for my family. I know how many animals I can afford to feed and care for and I know I don't have the space to properly raise two flocks of ducks. I will bring in more money for my family with the Saxonies.
Sometimes you have to let go of things you love
I have never been this emotional over selling a farm animal but hey, I love Khakis. Someday when I don't need to raise meat duck anymore I will have more.
So.... Striper, Morgana, Persephone, Tinkerbell, and Bob. I love you guys and I know you'll have a good life where you are going. Be good ducks and lay lots of eggs.
Striper, I will really miss you bud. Take care of your girls.
