Letting my broody raise 20 meaties. Now I have a rooster raising 50 CX chicks~new batch!

I don't understand how the meat could be green and it not either harm the bird or be bad. There are some people on here that have had their birds over a year and the meat was fine. That is just strange!

Sounds like they had circulatory problems and their extremeties were gangreneous....not good.

I was very pleased with the health of my meaties and was surprised to see some very healthy organs on these birds. I had heard they would die of organ failure and such but I'm wondering how much that has to do with the high protein diets they are generally fed.

I have another thread going where one of the hens did have a heart attack, the heart was very small and it was blown out of the top. Found her dead on her back, purple skin, fluid inside. It was warmer than normal that day and night, so I'm attributing it to that for now.

I took a pic of some of the organs inside my meaties....anyone not knowing which are which can feel free to ask!

Me and my husband had trouble with the round spherical one... the one on the bottom right ( not the hearts) below the livers...

It is located near the liver and I was thinking pancreas but it appears more like a spleen. Not sure about that one either. The rest are pretty clear, though.

Here is a shot of Mom peeling the inside lining out of the gizzard, in case you want to save it and do not realize this needs peeled out:

I have a dog that has an enlarged heart and after his diagnosis 1.5 years ago he wouldn't eat anything.... NOTHING human food. We finally discovered that he liked chicken gizzards, so he's the one that gets the innards

Its actually not that uncommon in CX if they are let go past about 12 weeks. I believe the articles I found on the topic stated that it was from lack of use of the muscle. They atrophe and .......turn green. The only thing effected was wing tissue. There was no smell like you'd get with gangrene. Birds didn't seem uncomfortable and never complained when I inspected the wings. But still, green meat, NO THANKS! I'll butcher them all before 12 weeks from now on.
