Letting my broody raise 20 meaties. Now I have a rooster raising 50 CX chicks~new batch!

Well I would post some pics, because I am obsessed regardless of breed, but I really can't figure out how to insert them. I'm usually not computer illiterate, lol. A little help, please?

Very nice tractor...love the design!! Will you shade one end or will they be stationed in the shade? I've found these meaties really love cooler weather...poor things can't seem to handle the heat like my laying gals. On the other hand, they will stay out in the rain longer than the layers also...I guess any kind of cool feels good to something with that high a metabolism!

I have enjoyed following this thread. My meaties will be a week tomorrow. We just put our layer chicks out in the coop yesterday. They can go out in a pen area for now, and hope to free range them once they are settled in their new home. As much as I was happy to get them outside I worried for them all night not having us around the clock to peek in at them. They survived (and so did I) their first night out.

We plan on putting the meaties out with the layers, so they will have some weeks of free range also. My question is what about the different higher protein diet they are on? Can the layers have this? Or do I need to separate the meaties during feed time? Silly question, but want to get it right the first time. My husbands famous words are "they will be fine". But I have taken to much time and care on them so far to let the layers or the meaties to not continue on the right path. I hope the young layers wont have a fit when their cousins come to visit for awhile!

Cant wait to see more updated pics.

They look great and very clean and healthy! They are gonna LOVE that fresh, cool grass!

I have never given mine the higher protein diet that other folks are giving and they seem to be growing well all the same. Mine share the layer ration of laying mash, oats, black oil sunflower seeds and a little cracked corn. I guess one would want to give higher protein and confine to a pen if they wanted to produce meat real quick but I don't really need to finish quickly. Time seems to slow down on Sweetwater Farm and the animals seem to enjoy living with the seasons....I couldn't imagine making them grow faster or produce more if their bodies were not naturally doing so.

So...no high protein rations for meaties, no lights on in the winter for layers, no grain rations for lambs to hurry finishing weights. Just plain fare and healthy digestion~although these meaties don't seem capable of normal bowel function...more's the pity. I'm wondering if the Freedom Rangers are different and have normal a metabolism?

It is really cool here since the storms moved through this weekend and we are supposed to have temps into the 40s tonight! The meaties are sure loving the cooler temps and lying in the cool orchard grass.

I should be getting layer chicks tomorrow or the next day and I have a broody just getting ready to hatch a clutch of 4 this week.....just in time to be a mother of 20 extra orphans. LOVE the timing on this...couldn't have happened better if I had planned it!

I should take a pic tomorrow when I move the run... this is only 14 (or 16.. can't remember!) birds and once they are gone then there will be 25 in there!!

Might have to rethink another pen.... hubby's gonna love me for that!!

They aren't so clean as they look, I am hoping more time out will clean up the underneath feathers. And there are three Sexlink roos in there with icky tail-feathers.... hopefully that will help them clean up too!

I'll try and remember to get pics on Thursday, as that's 7 weeks for them.

Ok great! I like your style. Guess Hubby is right "and they will be just fine...." He also agrees that if their not ready at 8 weeks, then their not ready. I guess I just worry about the young girls being upset with them around. I haven't even put them together and I'm already being a worry wart. I will learn to go with the flow as they also will. Thanks for the feedback. (I also was worrying about the light...thinking I should keep it on for them for now...ok ok I will turn their light out so they can rest at night.)
