I knew I would be hatching chicks this year and didn't want the same problem. That is why I decided to hatch purebred chicks that were a hard to find breed in this area. Before they even went into the incubator, I contacted the 4H extension office and other chicken people. I found 4H kids wanting purebred chickens (hens and roosters) to use as projects. I found that there were more families that wanted them, than I had birds to give. If your birds are purebred, you may be able to find 4hers willing to take them. If they are mix breeds, you may be able to find kids just looking for birds to gain experience. I made sure that the kids had parental approval and that they had guidance from a club leader or experienced parent before any were rehomed. I rehomed 9 birds so far. Out of 18 hatched, only 6 were roos. Good Lord! What are the odds of that!! The adoptive families are all planning to keep the birds as pets. They all know that I will take them back if they don't work out. I actually have a waiting list if I do this again next year!!
