I have been running it empty with water in the outside slots for 5 days. The temperature has varied by about a degree depending on the time of day I check it. The thermometer is laying on the wire and is at 99.00 pretty constant. Any suggestions before I set my eggs?

Generally, a wee bit higher temp is indicated for still air units. 99.5 would give you some "headroom" for a mid day spike in temps when the ambient air temperature is highest.

If you push the temperature up to 100.5 there would be little to no head room for a spike. That's always my thinking anyhow. Erring on the side of a .5 too low may result in the hatch being 12-24 hours late, but it a fair enough trade off.

This also allows for the inevitable upward creep at day 15 and beyond when the eggs themselves will begin generating some heat of their own and contribution to an upward drift of temps.

I ran mine at about 100.5 to 101 last year and had 2 great hatches. I will be running it the same this year. I am going to set eggs today.

100.5-101 in the wire or on top of the eggs?

I put my digital on top of the eggs, and the little one that came with the bator I sit on the wire rack, and it usually will be pretty close to the 99.5 line. With a still air there isn't any air movement so the bottom of the eggs will be a little cooler. I also have a LG turner in there.
