Of those who have a chicken-friendly dog... does anyone put their dog in the run overnight?

I don't know if we'd even want to do that, or if we want our hypothetical dog to serve a LGD role, but having a dog that defends chickens overnight might keep my son from being sad that the pup doesn't sleep with him.

My chickens are in their coop at night, My GP patrols the area, I would not have a problem putting her in with them, but then she could not patrol the area. She is with them all day when they are free ranging---no problem.

I have had dog in with birds at night but then dog will get into feeders. It is not to be done with pups (< 2 years old) otherwise risk high for dead chickens. Kenneling dog next to coop better option although you will not have as much protection as provided by dog able to move around coop / run and area around it.
