I need advice on treating 2 leghorn hens with lice.
Backstory: My son and I went to a farm to look at EE's chicks, but ended up coming home with two 14 month old white leghorn hens. They had been rescued from a battery cage farm with horrible conditions, they had just been forced to molt for better egg laying through starvation... they were going to kill 180 of them, but a farm took them in. They are starting to grow their feathers back and are a bit healthier now.
Before I left he told me that lice wasn't bad, that it cleans the chickens. He said that mites were bad though. He taught me that ground up clove helps and hung the chicken upside down and rubbed clove all over its bum.
While driving home my son saw a little orange bug crawling on the hens head. He also found one on him.
We put then in our quarentine coop on the opposite side of the house from our silkies. I put dimatatous earth in their dirt area, and around the bedding, I also spread it around the perimeter outside of the temp coop/run.
Then I used some lice treatment which I only have a picture of the instructions of...don't have the name, and I rubbed it all over both chickens.
I threw all my clothes on sanitary cycle, showered and left my shoes outside....
What now?
I'm a newbie...I cannot risk my silkies getting lice or my indoor pet birds, that is my biggest concern.
I have a little bit of the lice powder left, but not a whole lot...
Thanks in advance
