Can anyone tell me what chicken lice looks like? Does it look like lice that a human can get? Can a human get lice from the chicken? And what's the best control for lice or any other mite that a chicken might get? I would greatly appreciate any and all advice!! Thanks!!
Hi all. I am new to back yard chickens and new to this site. Anyway, my brother has racing pigeons and he uses tobacco stems to prevent lice. I don't know if this will or should work for Chickens.
Chicken lice are orangish in color and very small.Leg mites however are harder to distinguish because they usualy burrow in the leg and feet scales which can cause swollen feet and leg's.Most feed store's sell lice and mite powder. The best treatment for leg or foot mite's is Sulpher powder mixed with pet. jelly avg. about 1 to/2 oz per a LARGE jar.I've only had a couple of cases of both in raising bird's last 6 year's.Spring and early summer being worst. They are easily taken care of and I never worried about lice gettin on me since I only had one pen that got them and then treated all of my pen's and bird's after that.
Dar-that's exactly what's on my rooster Mainord, thank you for the pictures. I'm sure all the girls have them too.
So now.....I guess I need to treat them all. Dieselgrl48 and dsmith1427 thank you so much for the advice and information. I was so worried after finding the bugs that is was lice and I would have them on me. I had been holding Mainord for a while cause he was being a butt head to one of the hens. So I had picked him up and carried him around a while to show him who was boss!! LOL..
Well thanks again everyone, you all were very helpful.
