So... I wanted to get a rooster for my 10 hens. I went on kijiji and found a beautiful English game rooster for 10$. We drove over and hour and picked him up. While we were well on our way home, I happened to lift his tail feathers, and what I saw I was not pleased with. Bugs. Discussing bugs crawling all over him. I don't know what they are. I did not put him with my girls. He is in our basement right now, in a box. I called up the person who I bought the rooster from, and she said that it is probably bird lice, and she uses "dry kill" to get rid of it. She said I could bring the rooster back of I wanted to. But I love the rooster, and that would be another very long drive. What should I do??? My other hens come first, and I don't want to infest them with anything bad. Anyway, here are some pictures. I am so upset right now :(

I have never bathed a chicken but people do; maybe with flea shampoo? I would treat him with poultry dust (pyrethrin), or Sevin powder (carbaryl) and Ivermectin, to kill the external parasites, and any intestinal worms. Keep him away from your flock for two to four weeks, while he gets cleared of those parasites. Practice good biosecurity!!! Then pen him with one of your hens for a couple of weeks at least, to see if either of them gets sick. Good luck, Mary

Thank you for your reply. Oddly enough, I went and checked my other girls, and they had lice as well! I couldn't believe it. We purchased some powder stuff and put it on all of the chickens. Hopefully we won't have to reapply it. The safety precautions on the can were pretty scary. The rooster is now in with the girls, and he is so happy :) Thanks again Mary! :)
