My Barred Plymouth Rock Bantam rooster Penguin just turned one year old. He is a very spirited rooster and he eats better than I do. He gets an egg every other day if not everyday, he gets dried meal worms, corn on the cob and in the can, seeds, cheese, grapes, peaches (the fruit picked off the tree), and many other foods. What do you expect his life expectancy would be? And how could I improve his chance of living longer?

Predicting a chicken's lifespan is like trying to predict how long a person is going to live (70-90 years?). A lot of them don't make it much past five years, others will live over ten years. If Penguin stays reasonably healthy, you might figure on 7-8 years (could be longer). You can improve his chances of living with good care (a dry, draft free coop, regular cleaning of the coop, and a healthy diet that meets all of his dietary requirements). Avoid giving him much starchy treats as this will cause him to get fat and unhealthy. It's the equivalent of us eating potato chips and candy. Good luck with Penguin.
