Our neighbors dog dug under the fence and got one of our girls. Thankfully she survived as we came out as soon as we heard the commotion. He had gotten under a time or two to play with our dog, or because he had smelled that the girls had been free ranging earlier. The neighbor always said they would take care of it so he couldn't dig under anymore.
Well, after he got our girl, we presented him with an almost $90 vet bill. He paid it and has been MUCH more aware of where the dog was and making sure that if he even starts digging he goes inside. He did say he was going to ...blah blah blah... to make sure he couldn't get under the fence again, but never has done anything. But now he knows that if his dog gets under it is going to cost him money.
We are still very friendly with them, and truly feel no animosity, however, it is only *right* and *fair* and *just* for there to be consequences for his pet's actions. If it means that they need to buy you a whole new order of baby chicks, or to buy you an incubator and eggs for you to hatch, whatever. I assure you that when it hits people in the pocket they take notice. This is not, of course, to be mean or vindictive, but it is fair, and it motivates them to take action to prevent this from happening again.
I am so very sorry this happened and hope that it NEVER happens again.
((((hugs))))
