I was looking for a light brown egg layer that lays well in winter and has a good temperment. Any help would be very appreciated!

Some of my Wyandottes do, but my Wyandottes are pretty varied due to being from a hatchery.

Jersey Giants are a good light colored layer. They lay a tan colored egg, are just as sweet as they are huge, and lay pretty decently.

There are also Brahmas and Salmon Faverolles who generally lay pink tinted eggs, and have a decent production. They're absolute sweethearts and very beautiful, too! I absolutely love Brahmas and would love room for Favies, but I just don't think I'll have the room for them in the end. (technically I will, but not the indoor room)

You can't go wrong with the Red Stars or Black Stars, in my opinion. They are prolific layers of large medium brown eggs and very friendly. Because they are "sex links" their sex can be easily determined by their color at hatching. Since there is no guess work, you don't risk getting any roos in your order. Because they are hybrids, however, they are not good candidates for breeding if want more of the same breed. You cannot predict what you will get when breeding hybrids, and the variety can include not only color and temperament, but egg laying productivity.

Good luck with your selections and be sure to let us know what you decided.
