Light for warmth at night...will they be able to sleep?

I'll be using a light bulb for warmth for my pullets on cold evenings.
Dumb question, but I have to ask...will they be able to sleep with it on?
Will a red bulb give off as much light as a regular bulb of same wattage?
Never thought raising backyard chickens would raise so many questions!

Thanks for any insight...

Light will not keep them awake.

Some people prefer the red light. it is suppose to decrease pecking issues. I have had no problem with white light.

Different people have different experiences with it. I think the most sensible answer is "if you really want to try it, try it, and see what happens".

Red and white bulbs give off the same amount of heat. (So do heatlamp bulbs vs regular lightbulbs, pretty much, according to their wattage)

Bear in mind that the coldest part of the day, outdoors or in your coop, is not evenings or mid-night, it is just before (and sometimes just after) dawn. So it is worth thinking about whether you REALLY need heat all night long (if at all) or whether maybe just having it come on at 4 a.m. or soemthing like that would be sufficient.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
