I have had the hardest time finding any pictures of grey EEs, but I have been seeing a lot of "pullets" at this age with pinky combs in my searches. This little one is almost 6 weeks old and I am thinking cockerel but, because patterns play such a role in EEs sex I am confused to say the least. Guesses have been 50/50 male/female and I have to re-home before first crow. Thanks for your expertise.

Sorry, too early to tell conclusively. Solid colors are trickier. I'd guess cockerel based on the comb alone but really, I'd at least wait for the baby feathers molt before re-homing because pink in the absence of growth isn't definite. Now, if you see rusty red show up in the wing or pointed saddles/hackles emerging over the the next few weeks, well, that would be certain.

FWIW, the first crow isn't a big, hearty cockadoodledoo. It's more like a squeak or screech. Unless you're keeping chickens illegally, I wouldn't rush a maybe boy out the door.

Okay thank you, you have made a very valid point. I will hold off particularly because this is my favorite chicken. (S)He has made a couple sounds other than peeps in the past couple of days but, it sounded more like a traditional (but single) "bock". It is just so hard to wait to find out!
