Light to start egg laying

Well, you can't really blame the store employees.....Caveat emptor
I'm going to have to disagree. Since these individuals work at a feed store, it's not unreasonable to assume that they're familiar with the products they sell; if they're not, all they have to do is say "I don't know" or ask a more knowledgeable employee to assist. It's not ok for them to provide bad info to customers...at the very least, that's poor service. A customer is going to be pretty peeved when s/he gets all the way home, looks at the bag, and realizes it's not the appropriate product for her/his flock's needs.

Here's a suggestion: how about some (actual) training for those folks?

Finally got our first pullet egg of the year today. Didn't want extension cords so opted for a 7 foot string of led lights on 3 AA batteries. Self timer to stay on for 6 hours. Was not sure if it would be enough light to work but hey, $5 and free shipping so why not? Looks as though it was enough light as we've maybe 9.5 hours daylight this time of year and have the very first pullet egg today.

Being a goofy little light set up and the need to change batteries at the same time of day I'm not whole heartedly recommending this product. But it does show how little light is needed to get pullets laying in the dark days of the year. Basically the 3 AAA could keep the light going 6 hours a day for two weeks but it gets dimmer and dimmer past one week of operation. So I change out batteries a little over a week a part and do it around 2 PM to make the light stay on until 8 pm. Sunrise here is still before 7 am and that makes for 13 hours total light. By actual solstice it will be 12 hours total light. Point is you need to add light if the pullets have yet to lay by November. And it doesn't take much light (watts) to get them laying. People use short light strings on timer and extension cord all the time. What I used is even less but really didn't want to run a cord.

Let me see if I can find this light string...

Yup, this is it, very cheesy but did work:
