What is the light yellow/tan bug all over my chickens rump?? I noticed a few little black mites in the coop so I dusted the chickens and the coop with DE. When dusting the chickens I inspected them and noticed one of them had these other "bugs" on its vent area. I bought poultry dust because I was told DE wasnt entirely effective but I've been scared to use it. I've been noticing a few more mites so I finally broke the poultry dust out and now my other hen has a ton of those tan things all over heer vent...the others wasnt noticeable. Is it another type of mites? Fleas? Should I sprinkle the poultry dust in the coop and run?? I was thinking that didnt seem right to just leave a poison on the floor of their coop...to easy to ingest...but is that what I need to do to get rid of all the unwanted little pests??

What are they doing on the rump, are they clinging to it? Are you sure it's not maggots?

BTW, the reason why I question is because, for people like me anyway, I can't get a good look at things without my reading glasses!

I have the same thing!!!! My production red has been in the coop for days, she only leaves when I make her to collect eggs. Her rump is torn up and until this morning I thought she was going broody and wasn't leaving the nest to eat and because feathers are 85% protein, I figured she was eating them for food. this morning I went to check on her and noticed tan/light yellow bugs around her vent. I looked at my other chickens and they seemed fine so I got out an old dog kennel, filled it with wood shavings, added food and water, put 2 eggs in there so she could nest, then put her in there. I'm going to do some more research but I figured I go to BYC first. Please help!
