Lighthouse Keeper Starting out with Chickens! Maybe!

Welcome!

My first batch of chicks is coming at the beginning of April. (I'm in the Shenandoah Valley, in Virginia.)

Good luck! I'll bet you find them almost as entertaining as healthy food providers.

Do you have any small predators on your island? I wonder if ospreys would take chickens.
I used to live in Shenandoah Valley, VA! Small world!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I am new/I do not have any yet.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

None... thinking of 3-4 chickens...small. Personal use.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Imaginary!

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I am a lighthouse keeper on Canada's West Coast. I get groceries flown in every month by helicopter. I would love a fresh supply of eggs!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Woodworking, sailing, gardening... food, not flowers.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I have a 13-Year-old Yellow lab named Sugar.... and she is just as sweet as her name, and I have two orange tabbies named Ginger and Marianne. As I said before, I live on an Island LIghthouse station and write a blog about daily life. I would love to add chickens to the mix and see what happens. (7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

A neighbour on an adjacent island recommended this forum as the place to learn about Backyard Chickens!! I am going to lurk for a bit, but if anybody has a good recommendation for a 3-4 chicken coop for a beginner, that would be much appreciated. If there is a kit, that would be better. Hard to get lumber by helicopter!

Thanks!
Andrew
Welcome to BYC. If it's info you want . You have come to the right place

I'm up at the northern end, in Clarke County, about twenty miles from Harper's Ferry. It is a beautiful area.

I see you're in Washington, now. That's a bit of a move!
I love Harper's Ferry! We lived along the Shenandoah River about 10 miles out of Front Royal. And yes...long move!!! Love it here!
