Lighting for chicks red vs white

Hi!
In the past I have used a basic white light for the brooder, but it sounds like a red heat lamp is a good option too. Do you feel like on or the other is a better option? What wattage would you recommend for the red heat lamp--40watt, 60watt?
Also, how long do you recommend keeping the light on for? I can't really remember how long I used to keep the light on--I think maybe 24hrs for the first couple days, and then I would turn it off at night?
Any comments much appreciated!!
 
I have a red light and never used a white light before so I don't know the differences. The red light is good for many reasons 1 of them is if a chick is bleeding the other chicks won't peck at it since everything looks red. I use my light 24 hours until they are almost a month.
