What light bulbs do you guys use in your hen houses for your layers ??? do you think hens lay different if they receive their extra light from incandescent bulbs compared to the newer CFLs . In BC they are fazing out the old incandescents so i was just curious.

I put a low watt CFL, 40 equivalent I think, in my coop a few weeks ago. Production has increased from 0-2 up to 4-6 of 9 current layers. It's on a timer of course, comes on in the early morning only, for 14 hours of light.

We're stocking up on the old style because they're being phased out here too. But from what I've read here on BYC, the type of light doesn't seem to matter for the purpose of extending the day...light is light to the chickens it seems.

CFLs are more dangerous than the old incandescents.

CFLs are supposed to be "more green". That is a joke. If they break, they put more harmful substances into the atmosphere than an incandescent ever would and what do you do with one that's blown out? You put it in the trash were its going to end up BROKEN!

Oh, and take a wild stab in the dark where literally ALL CFLs are made? You guessed correctly, CHINA!

I agree CFLs are a joke , i read recently that in colder climates there is no energy savings, they dont create heat like the old incandescents so people end up turning on their heat more.
