I have 5 chickens one is moulting right now so only four are laying . I heard that you can increase the egglaying by adding more light so they have more daylight hours . So.......... I put up a stran of Christmas lights ( white ) in their coop. I added hours in the Am they come on at 4AM and shut off at 730AM them come back on at 4pm til 730pm . My concern was putting heat into the coop . I dont want heat in there do you think by adding the lights that there would be too much heat in there for them ? Or should i just rip them out of there ( the lights ) .

If these are twinkle lights' I'm not sure they generate that much heat. As long as they are not near the girls, who will peck at them or near hay or straw they might be ok.

I wish you well,

I put a cord of string lights out there for lighting, comes on in the a.m. & p.m. - it doesn't create heat. The lights are the kind you put under a canopy tent. You should be able to touch them when they are on and not feel any heat.

After some thought you might want to rethink the "christmas" lights. Your sure to have a lot of disappointed hens come Christmas morning if there are no presents.

Seriously I'm going to string some along the fencing near the coop so there is light when I go out to shut them up at night. Because I have a light on in the coop I like to give them an hour or two after sundown.

I just hung a shop light with a twirly no heat bulb in there. It is on a timer and is on 14 hours a day. Of course in Anchorage we now only have 4 natural hours and those are dusky.

I am on my 4th day of artificial lighting. I used a shop lamp I had from chick days, and added a 23 watt fluorescent bulb(2 for $1 at the discount store!) I turn it on when I get up at 4-5am,and then off around 6-7pm. No heat at all but darn it sure is bright in the chicken shed. I had a hen in the booda box all day and was hoping for an egg,but I think she was just chillaxing. I swear it feels like I am waiting for that very first egg all over again!

Wow I like that idea ! I think I just might get those lights. You dont have to worry about anything catching fire.
Thanks

I got those lights at walmart camping section over the summer. They are working out great so far.
