Climate: East Texas kinda confused the coop is 6x4x5 comes out to 120 sq ft. new to this so are we figuring floor space? nesting space? roosting space? theres 4 nesting boxes, 2 roost, and 24 sq ft on bottom plus another 4 sq ft on the sec shelf hope to fit 17 birds thats what the wifey ordered........

It looks really cute ... but I think 17 chickens will be a little bit too much if you go by the 4 square feet floor space per bird. But it looks like you have a nice big run maybe you can build on and make the coop bigger ???

17 birds, huh?
The rule I heard on here was 4 sq ft per bird...

According to your measurments, you've got 28 sq ft?
According to the seasoned chicken peeps on here (and a book I read), you should have 68 sq ft.

Not trying to rain on your parade - your coop looks awesome!
Is that a big access panel on the side?
I'm just trying to get this straight (chook noob!).

I'm limiting us to a max of 10 chickens, so that's 40 sq ft.
Going by the rules, I'm looking at an 8'x5' structure - that's HUGE!!!

Seriously?!?
Y'all sure we aren't talking about cubic feet?

What if i add more floor space cause it is like a lil 3 story ? if i added say 4x3 on the second floor? now i would have 12 + 28 = 40 ? no / Yes ? i just built this 1 day ago..... o well

I really don't know that you need to add anything.
I'm thinking that yours is going to be plenty big for awhile - you are ordering lil baby chicks, not full grown chickens, right?
They're gonna be little for a couple months, right.

I'd say grow it as your flock grows!

So long as you have plenty of roosting space, although it is on the small side for 17 birds, they will be fine. Most of their time will be spent outside anyway...most likely they'll be only in there for laying eggs and sleeping. I would try to incorporate more nest boxes though...I have 5 for my 20 something flock and there are always the hens that take forever and there are always hens standing on the rail squawking at them to "get up already!" Is there a possibility that some of the chicks coming are roos?? Or did your wife only order pullets? Cuz roos could be an easy way to downsize....

Plus, this coop here could be your brooder house

and could give you an excuse to build a larger one in the future....if you wanted to of course.
