Lime .... how many of us use it in there chickens - turkeys and ducks runs to cut down on the smell and taking care of breaking down the poo dropping .

I end up doing this ever 2-3 months each year when I know we will be getting rain the next day and end up locking them in there coop for that day when it is raining .

MMMMMM gUESS NO ONE USE LIME

So what do you use beside raking and picking up the crap what to up use to cut down any smells left in there run area

Not for the coop , I clear it out bi-monthly and us DE with 4-6 “ of deep shaving and no smell in there coop .
but as far as the run it seem when we have a rainy or heavy rain during the month it seem to smell a pit more the next few days ,so I spread lime in there run when I know we are going to get a shower or heavy rain that night or the next day , it seems after I do this it cuts the smell of the chick poop , I also do this in my dog run also , plus it helps with the growth of the grass where the dogs ppppppp, and also cuts down any smells ....

See my soil is more of a clay base here in the country and take a while to dry out after a good rain , so to me it seems to stink after the rain for a few days on dryer days it not bad just smells like a farm .....
Get DA Picture

Thanks anyway Alan

I thought lime would burn their feet?? Is there a special kind of lime to put down or do you have to keep the chickens out of the run for a while??

I use the same type of lime as I would for the garden and yes if I know it will be raining that night or the next day befor I place it in there run I 'll keep them in the coop and the dogs just get the run of the yard for that day , after the rain day they all go back out to there runs .

Make sure it's the powder type lime for gardens not the pellet type like they use for the grass / lawn ,

I'm surprise that no one has and issue with there chicken run –turkey run or even horse , goat or cattle runs , which I know horses and cattle and goats are keep in larger runs size then chickens , turkeys , or even pen up ducks , but there has to be some poo smells coming from there runs , and just wondering what others do poo / crap is smelly after a while even in the dirt /grasses runs .

May be it’s just me

no, not just you. Smell was a big issue here last spring/early summer, and looks as if it's going to be again. we've had a very wet spring/summer last year, and lots of rain here the last couple of months. I got some lime the other day so I can do the run w/ it; just not sure how much to use. I was thinking of using a handheld seed/fertilizer spreader to distribute it. We just got down to where most of the standing water was gone, and then got a flood this evening. We will have standing water for at least another week now.

We have the non-draining clay here too. I am looking forward to buying a few tons of sand this summer and put it in the run so it doesn't look like a swamp and smell like a sewer. grrrrr!

I hear ya , I just spray it with my small push seed/fertilizer spreader, or sometime just use a can and spreader it that way . I to I'm looking at adding about 1-2 in. of 3/4 stone base over the base ground clay dirt ground and covering it with a few inchs of sand also this spring / summer 2010

I was starting to think I was doing something wrong as no-1 else seem to have a bit of smell in there runs ..........................................................
