Limes with ducks and chickens?

I've heard that squeezing limes in you chicken/duck pen will make it smell better. Is that true? And would the limes harm them?

I like dried oak leaves - don't need them most of the time - keeping the water flowing out of the pen and into a garden helps, as does the occasional addition of chopped straw. But some days when we need a little extra, oak leaves.
