A bit ago my hen was limping so checked her for bumblefoot and she was good there. Her skin was red and up above her leg on the side she was limping on was yellowish thin stuff that I could soak and remove. I wasn't sure if it was infection and her legs don't appear to have scaly mites or anything so wasn't sure if it was related to an injury of a ligament or tendon or her skin being irritated.

She appeared to improve but then I noticed her limping more again and when I checked that leg once again above her leg where her skin is she had a sma bulbous yellowish mass I was able to remove but it was like attached to her skin slightly. Her leg looks reddish too.. But what I'm concerned about is:

1.what is it/what's causing this
2. She has a larger mass that is hardened and I don't think I can necessarily remove it now.
3.what would you do to help address this?

That may be an ingrown feather cyst. Can you get a clear picture? If it is a feather cyst, you can explore it with a sterilized needle and look into it for a feather.

I will try to get a better pic she was ready to get up and a bit squirmy when i took the pic. I had given her a soak and wrapped her up to look her leg area more closely and I saw a much smaller circular yellowish almost crusty/pus like one nearby that i was able to remove. that small one was slighly stuck to her skin and this one appears to be too but much harder and like it won't come off. I don't want to hurt her and thought someone may know what it is. Her skin was similar to his before but a thin layer, not a bump type. It's storming today so I will try to get a better pic. she is walking around and eating fine etc but just with a limp. she has been limping slightly for awhile and I thought she has injured her tendon or ligament in that leg or something as nothing else has gone on, no bumblefoot, not acting hurt other than limping and if you mess with her leg she obviously is favoring it.

She will put weight on it, usually. When jumping up onto the roost she will pull it up sometimes and if I pick her up she will pull her leg up and curl her toes some. She walks around fine other than limping some more than others.

Update: got this pic this evening. The base appeared to be looser on one side today so I tugged at it as gently as I could. There is some scabing/scaley yellow along her skin in couple spots near this but it's flat. I was able to pull this off and it was bleeding slightly in a couple spots. She struggled a little as pulled it off but nothing major. Sprayed w blu Kote and will monitor. Not sure what's causing her skin to do this unless it's an infection of some sort but once I pulled the mass away it looked mostly OK. She seems to be walking better on it since I got the mass removed.

Yah I am not sure as I haven't encountered feather cysts before and I did look at that link as well as several others and those pics looked like a large swelling area of skin was involved but this didn't have that so I am not sure. I will keep monitoring that area though and see if additional action is needed if it doesn't heal or doesn't improve.
