Limpin Chicken

My 5 month old Barred Rock hen Oreo started limping on one foot a few days ago, it seemed to be getting better but then yesterday she sat down and didn't want to move around with the others. This happened with her twin sister 1 mo ago after our ( huge) Rooster mounted her and injured her leg but she's fine now. I placed Oreo on the roost last night and she make her way to the nest to lay this am but I put her in a cage today for rest and observation. I did a good physical assessment and don't find any sign of fracture or external injury. I read that vitamin B deficiencies can cause tendon problems so she has this is water in cage. Can I give her an anti-inflammatory? can't find what is safe to give or dosage? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Welcome to BYC. Hopefully is something g minor that time will heal. You might want to consider getting a smaller rooster.

A rooster can cause a lot of damage. Unless you have 10 or so hens for him, he is probably overbreeding your girls.

X2 on needing more hens and getting a smaller rooster. He can not only over mate them but if he is too heavy, he can sprain their legs. 1 roo to 10 to 12 hens is a good ratio.

I hope your hens heal soon.

Thanks for the good advice. We have 6 hens and hopefully we'll have some baby chicks to add to the flock. "Clarence" was supposed to be a hen, "Clarabel", but he surprised us and has bonded with us all so replacing him is not an option. The others seen to be doing OK so I'll keep Oreo inside until she is well. Would still like to know if I can give ASA vs Ibuprofen and at what dose since she seems to be uncomfortable?

"Dissolve five (5 grain) aspirin tablets in one gallon of water. Offer this solution free-choice to the birds for the duration of an illness. The solution aspirin equivalent to 25 grains/gallon or 324 mg/gallon of drinking water. The dosage rate is about 25 mg/lb body weight per day."

Thanks for the great resource page I tried the ASA for 5days but did not note any improvement so she is back in the yard to rehab. We had to take our rooster back to feed store today since he would not leave her alone and others were getting bloodied up by repeated advances. One of the saddest days of my life.

When I bought my speckled Sussex girl she was in a tiny little concrete pen with 2 enormous roosters and 2 huge hens. It has taken her awhile to act like a normal chicken,. And she has feathers that still need to grow back. She is the sweetest thing!
Sorry about your roo but your hen will be happier!
