Help! I have a hen that is limping and I don’t know why. Yesterday she seemed fine. For now we are allowing her to continue free-ranging with the flock, as usually this time of day they just lay around in the shade anyway.

Details:
  • Cuckoo Maran
  • 5 years old
  • Hasn’t been laying for maybe a year
  • Heavily molting right now
  • Carefully inspected her feet, pads, scales, hocks, and legs, but nothing seems awry or any different from her other leg.

Tilly, my Easter Egger walked in for moral support.

Have you looked at her foot pads for any scabs or bumblefoot, and looked along the legs for any swelling, redness, or green bruising? A picture of both legs while standing might help. I would probably limit her movement during the days inside a dog crate near the other chickens for company, and rest the leg.

Thank you for your suggestions. I’ll see if I can get a picture of her legs and feet.
