HI
I have a 6mos barred rock hen. She has been limping for a week. I have her separated and she is eating and drinking. I can't find any cuts or swelling. Does anyone have any advice??
Thanks

I have the same problem, except mine is thin.

Get some Poly-Vi-Sol liquid baby vitamins (no iron) and give her three drops a day on her beak for a week, then taper off. It can't hurt her, and sometimes leg problems are caused by a vitamin B deficiency.

If you are free-feeding layer pellets (without treats such as scratch) they are supposed to get a balanced diet, but sometimes it's not enough.

make sure you do a good check of the bottom of her foot, and between the toes for any sore, heat or swelling, or a splinter.

feel the back/hip/leg area for any heat or swelling.
do you have a roo, or roos that might be a little rough in mating?

make up this mix..sometimes at this age they need some calcium for the bones due to a growth spurt.
do these birds get sun?

this is for 1 day..divide into 3 feeds for the day.
give for 5 days along with usual feed.

1 cooked egg yolk
1/2 teaspoon honey or unsweetened applesauce
2 tablespoons plain yogurt
3-4 tablespoons water cooked oatmeal
feed enough to make the mix puffy, not soupy or gummy.

give the vitamins as Ruth posted.

Thanks for the help! I'm so new to this site it took me a while to find your response. I've had her separated for a week, when she gets better do you think I will be able to re-introduce her to her 6 sisters and roo?

I'm feeding all my chickens layena, scratch with oyster shell, treats are raisens, cauliflour and yogurt. (I also throw them weeds and grass) I can't free range them because of predators, but they all have a big coop (former stall) with nesting boxes, roosts and an enclosed run. I'm going to try vitamins today. Thanks
