Hey, BYC admins - Why do you want ppl to leave you site?
Clicking on a link in the forums should really open a new window or tab.
It's kinda frustrating (at 1:am) when you follow a link to sombody's flckr page and 20 pics deep you realize that BYC is looong gone.

In reality, it's easy enough to ctrl-t and get back to where you were, but this is the internet - that's way too much to expect from us silly end-users!
Make it easier for us, please!
Thanks.

I solved the problem by putting the forum main page on my bookmarks toolbar.

You can right click the link and choose "open in new tab" or "open in new window"

I use a desktop, the laptop rarely see daylight. So I have a $10 scrolling mouse and a new tab is opened simply by center clicking.
It allows me to have 15-20 tabs open anytime I want to get cross-eyed!

If you hold down control while clicking on the link, it should also open up in a new tab.

Some browsers also let you change settings so that clicking on any link will open a new tab or window if you so choose.

Standard practice is for forums to have links open in the same window and leave it up to the browser software and the person to change their personal settings to decide if they want the behavior to be different.

Personally I hold down the CTRL button when I click which opens each link in a new tap (shift click opens in a new window).

All very good advice.
Professionally speaking, I like for my users to push as few buttons as possible to achieve a certain goal.
There are some on here that aren't quite as savvy as others.
...just saying! ^__^

Yup it is a tricky 6 in one hand / half cozen in another situation. The problem with any global solution that impacts tens of thousands of people is that it is difficult to find a one-solution-fits-all approach which is why we've decided to go with the standard behavior that most visitors (especially newbies) expect. In this case we've found that the majority of visitors expect that links will not open in a new window and would be surprised if every link behaved this way.
