Tsc specials I got today. Never had ducks so I need advice. The little yellow looks like a Pekin but has a bump/ lipoma on top of its head. Seems a little weak but I only had nutritional yeast so I added that to the food. The second duckling I’m wondering what the breed is. Thanks!

I believe you have a White Crested and a Khaki Campbell. A crest is a mutation which results in a slight gap in the skull and a fatty lump grows to protect it. Any kind of duck can be crested but White Crested is a separate breed. Some crested ducks have neurological problems so keep an eye on your baby. If she turns out to be a female you also want to watch out for her during breeding season. You don’t want a male grabbing her by the crest. I adopted the crested silver Swedish in my Avatar. She has not had any issues and I think she is beautiful.

You are such a help thanks so much! I really hope she/ he is crested because the lump scared me! Any pictures of yours when they were little? The nugget was the smallest in the crew so of course I couldn’t leave it there lol. How are crested ducks personalities? This morning I noticed she was still wobbly, I have a camera in the brooder, so I gave some nutri- drench. Probably about 0.3ml Because she was getting annoyed with me at that point then put the rest in the waterer. I have electrolytes and probiotics in the water. Side note, not seeing a lot of poop, my chicks poop continuously. Butts don’t look pasty, do ducks not poop as much? Once she gains some more strength I’d like to let them swim. I’m sure they will poop then 😂

Oh yes, water gets them going. Is your duckling eating well? The nutritional yeast is a very important way to get natural niacin into them which they need for strong legs. And Nutri drench is excellent for giving them a boost, especially after shipping. Make sure to let them swim in nice warm water and give them to drink tepid not cold water.
Your little brown duckling maybe khaki Campbell. They are both adorable.

I’m watching on camera and I think the nutri-drench helped because she’s all over the place. Eating and crop looks big. I was going to wait a few days till I felt like they were settled in before putting them in water. But as long as they are saying good and active I will this weekend. I’m feeding all flock, I’ve always fed my chickens all flock. Purina or nutrena brand. Thanks for the tips! I’ve raised bantams and they are so tiny I stress over them. And with ducks I’m clueless! But I did give grit and will probably give some egg yoke soon, anything to keep the little one strong. She’s still stumbling a little.

How is your little crested getting on?
My son has a pekin crested that was the smallest of three from TSC. She was always cute and has grown into a lovely, but small adult duck. She is quite a good layer -- she started laying at 17 weeks old, stopped for 2 months from December through to February, but then started laying most days from then forward. She also has a deformity in her neck -- cervical spine. It doesn't bother her. She is such a character -- the other two pekins [a duck and a drake] are sweet ducks but don't have strong personalities. "Mop Head' as she affectionately is named, makes sure everyone knows she has a big personality -- and she is a very noisy little duck with it!

Adorable! Mine is doing well. It’s hard to tell but the little too of her head isn’t uniform. But tiny crest if any. Thanks for asking. She’s definitely my fave 😊
