list of vets

Wanted to make sure you have the correct information for the greatest avian vet I know! The listing for her is her old address in Perrysburg.

The new information is: Orosz, Susan DVM - Bird & Exotic Pet Wellness Center
(419) 843-3137
5166 Monroe St, #305, Toledo, OH 43623

She is so wonderful and resonably priced too. She loves chickens and parrots of all types. She did complete gram stains, well birdie checks, beak and toenail trims and medicine on eight parrots for only $500 last week.
My birds seemed to have caught a bacterial infection from me (I had pneumonia) and my one conure has a heart murmer, so it is great to have someone like her take care of everything!

She loves chickens too and I am taking some fecal samples in to her when I go for the follow-up in two weeks.

Her staff is very kind and caring as well and it makes a drive very worth-while. It is an hour and a half drive for me, but I would never go to any other avian vet......see the following excerpts for more information:

Birds and exotic pets are unique animals requiring advanced knowledge in their structure, function and diseases for proper treatment. In 2006 we opened our hospital, The Bird and Exotic Pet Wellness Center, to provide quality care for these special pets- including birds, reptiles, snakes, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, mice and other small pocket pets, amphibians, fish and exotic hoof stock. For all of these special animals, yearly veterinary exams tailored for their needs should be performed.

Our doctors, Dr. Susan Orosz and Dr. Tim Reichard have been working with birds and exotics for over 26 years exclusively. “Dr. O” is board certified in avian medicine and has taught vet students and residents at The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine for 18 years. “Dr. Tim” interned at the San Diego Zoo and then was the Chief veterinarian at the Toledo Zoo for 23 years.

In addition to our long experience, we strive to stay on the cutting edge with these unique animals both by giving and attending presentations at continuing education conferences. We regularly attend special conferences like the AAV (Association of Avian Veterinarians), AAZV (American Association of Zoo Veterinarians), AAWV (American Association of Wildlife Veterinarians), and ARAV(Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians) while maintaining memberships in these and other related groups. Both Drs. Orosz and Reichard are involved in research projects and write scientific and informative papers in their subject areas. Both speak regularly at national and international veterinary conferences, sharing their expertise with other veterinarians. Dr. Orosz has published two avian textbooks and multiple chapters in others.

On Long Island, in New York State, in the area of Long Island called Nassau County:

My local dog and cat vet told me they don't take chicken patients, but gave me the name of a vet within Nassau County that does. I called that vet and the receptionist Jennifer told me that they do indeed treat chickens. Said that they had a chicken in just last week. Also told me that they kept their own pet Silkie chicken in the office for many years. I've never been to their office but if any of my three chickens ever need a vet, that's where I'll go:

I am so glad to see the excitement over finding an avian veterinarian that treats chickens! Thank you everyone for your enthusiasm and your willingness to use our services. I see many chickens in my practice, too. Many of my favorite patients are chickens. I have been encouraging all of my colleagues to see more chickens, and it seems to be helping. And I agree, Dr. Orosz is awesome!

They hover, swoop, and flutter, soar and glide:
On beating wings they climb to heaven's height;
On unseen currents of the air they ride
Secure in space, in mastery of flight.

A
bit about Dr. Marylou Litner:

She has been an active member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians for over 22 years, and attends the AAV International conference regularly. Her presentation of the master level class entitled "The Diagnosis and Treatment of the Pet Chicken" at the 2006 Association of Avian Veterinarians conference in Texas was well received and well attended at both sessions. She most recently presented topics in August 2008 at the AAV conference in Savannah, Georgia.
