Hi All,
My chicken has been quite listless lately. I first thought it was the heat, but I'm no longer certain. I first noticed something was wrong when she wouldn't sleep up on the roost but instead would sleep in the nesting box with the broody hen (she isn't broody). Then, on a hot day (90's, very humid), I came across her standing up and half asleep- leaned forward, eyes closed. She let me pick her up with no problem, when usually she runs away. I brought her inside for two days to watch her, thinking she would perk up when she cooled down. She had some normal poops but also some dark green poops, some solid some very watery. She would stand in one place, wherever I placed her, and wouldn't wander around. When she sits she sometimes leans to the side. She started wandering around a bit more and eating, so I put her back outside on a slightly cooler day, and she wandered around with the flock a bit, scratching the dirt for bugs, but then I noticed she would hide her head under a bush and again seemed to sleep standing up. She is getting weaker, falling out of the nest box instead of stepping over it. Her eyes and nose seem clear, a slightly poopy bottom but she has always been that way. Any ideas? I have fresh water for the flock, purina start and grow without antibiotics, grit, oyster shell / egg shell, boss, and some bird feeder bird seed every once in a while, and then whatever they find while roaming the yard for a few hours.

I'm afraid we can only guess, and the guesses might not be good news. The green may indicate she isn't eating a lot. They often have somewhat watery poops when it's hot, just from drinking more. Did she lay an egg when you had her isolated? How old is she? Is her crop empty early in the morning? You don't mention offering a calcium source like oyster shell. Occasionally a hen needs more calcium than the others. One boost is to put a Tums in the waterer, but don't do this every day. How many eggs is the flock laying? Can you feel any swelling over her abdominal area or near the vent? Have you checked for lice/mites?

Thank you for the response! We do have calcium available to them with oyster shells and ground up egg shells (I edited above to include that too). She hasn't laid an egg in a while; it is hard to keep track of who is laying, but with 5 laying chickens we've only been getting 2-3 eggs. She hasn't laid one while inside for 3 days. However, I don't feel a bulge in her abdomen though I don't quite know what to feel for (she is very skinny). I don't see any mites or lice on her, and I do sprinkle DE periodically around the coop. I just bought some SMZ-Med 454 and put that in the water for all the chickens and got her to drink some from a syringe, in case it is coccidiosis, but her poop doesn't seem to look right for the descriptions of coccidiosis.

I thought about cocci, but she is eating, and you didn't mention her being fluffed out. On the bulge in the abdomen, I was thinking of ascites, or fluid buildup. If she had this to any degree, you would notice it when feeling her "belly." You would literally feel the fluid, a little like a partly filled balloon. Ascites has a number of causes, anything from a cancer or internal laying to heart or liver failure. If whe were eggbound you should be able to feel the egg near the vent.

If the SMZ doesn't help after a few days, I think I would stop it and try worming, if you don't routinely worm them. But first I would give some buttermilk for a few days to help her gut recover. Can you get Valbazen? Amazon or Jeffers Livestock has it if your feed store doesn't. It's about $40 for the smallest bottle. Dose is 0.5 ml per large fowl, squirted into the mouth or fed on a bit of bread. Repeat in 10 days and toss eggs for a total of 24 daysValbazen gets all types of worms and is relatively easy on them, even if they have a big load of worms. A heavy worm load will definitely cause weight loss. Or, see if your vet will do a fecal exam for you,on a sample. Many will, for not a big fee.

I don't know what else to try -- but I'm hardly an expert. I hope she improves.

Hey thanks for your input. Unfortunately my poor Biddy has passed away. I gave her SMZ by hand (and gave it to the whole flock of 10 as well, in their water) in case it was cocci, but I think it was too late for it to have an affect. Also, as I was holding her to give her the medicine and some yogurt with some vitamins, and looked through her feathers closely I noticed she did indeed have lice on her. I put a few drops of dog flea medication on her and tons of lice dropped off - I had no idea she had been so infected! I am afraid that it was a combination of things that may have brought her down..

I then went and got some permethrin to treat the rest of the flock for lice as well.

I M having the same problem with a young chick 3 months old I brought her inside today, but I'm not sure what lice look like . None of my other chickens are like this.
