I purchased 5 - 3 month old pullets from the local poultry club a month ago. up until 2 weeks ago they were all doing well eating, drinking, in general very active. Then 1 of the girls started to act a little listless & walked around hunched up but still eating & drinking, Stools appear normal but darker than the rest, she has no visiable injuries, no abnormal discharge from eyes or nose, breathing is normal, no sneezing or coughing has been noted. I've been feeding a grower crumble supplemented with greens, earthworms, occational plain yogart & what ever they find on the ground in their pen. They are housed in a large pen with pine & redwood shavings because the ground has been damp so was hoping to soak up some of the excess moisture with the shavings. The Coop is on a raised platform & it also has shavings inside to help with the manure control. I had separated her out from the rest of the flock a few days ago just to keep a closer eye on her however tonight because it was going to be a bit chilly I put her back with the rest of the girls after they when to bed. She felt very thin to me which I hadn't noted before. Any one have any ideas on what might be her problem?

Kittymom - best wishes for you and your girls. We also just noticed nearly identical signs with one of four of our young hens. None of them have started laying yet, and the largest one (an Ameraucana) has just started moping around with her tail down and drinking a lot of water but not eager to peck and scratch like the others. I imagine it could be any number of things and I am trying not to fear the worst. Is it possible that she feels oddly because she is about to lay her first egg? Thanks to anyone who can help us out.

I have a RIR that was doing the same thing--- that and she had bright green poop... I was told that that was most likely because she wasn't eating enough. I have a feed room in one of my coops so I separated her in there and started giving her probiotics, sulmet, and wet crumbles, scrambled eggs and oatmeal and Poly-Vi-Sol. After two days she is finally walking around but still appears weak---- this morning she wandered outside but she was getting pushed around by the others so I put her back in her little room... definitely improvement in her attitude and in the poo situation--- I guess my point is that if there are no clear symptoms do supportive things... I decided to give the sulmet because I had no idea what was going on and it treats several commonailments.

thanks for the in put. I finally decided to contacted the person that I got the pullets from, he said it sounded like Coccidiosis & that I should try sulmet in the water. however I have not been able to locate a local supplier. one supplier said they haven't been able to get it lately. Will keep looking.

Mine probably has diarrhea, and since Coccidiosis is an intestinal thing, I don't suppose it would hurt to give sulmet....

Thankfully my local feed store has some among other things.

I wonder if yogurt would help...?

I've read that yogurts acts as a probiotic - I use the plain greek style yogurt. The girls really like & I use it only as a treat at this point maybe 1 Tablespoon/5 birds.

I thought the guy said he had "sulmet", but now I am trying to look it up on yahoo, wiki, etc.

What is it?

found it. Ok, I have read articles that make it sound like I am in for it. Is it possible to "cure" cocci once we have it?

She definitely exhibits the clear liquid discharge from mouth when you pick her up I suppose the bloody diarrhea is next. I am worried.

some good sites about coccidiosis

Also, after ready many posts, it seems that the consensus is to use "corid" which apparently is amprolium (powder). It seems to do much better than Sulmet, and can be gotten in the bovine of feed stores sectoin in additio to other places. The feed store was closed tonight when I went out to get something like sulmet or corid so I got an antibiotic that is "safe for all birds" (erythromycin), but I found a post which said NEVER treat coccidiosis with an antibiotic....

So.....I am waiting until the morning to get the right thing.

I only have the one bird showing signs, but I am sure the rest probably have it.

I do not see bloody stools yet, so I am hopeful that I can still catch it if I get the amprolium (powder) into her soon tomorrow.

wish me luck.
