About how thick should the litter shavings in the coop be to start with?

I just threw some into get them in tonight, its not very thick right now, maybe 1/2-3/4" thick. I figured I'd scoop and add more as I do. I didn't think I should go deeper until it gets cold. We're still in and out of the high 70's low 80's lately.

I'd show pictures but we literally just finished the coop as the sun setting. WHAT A DAY! ARGH!

i have about 3" worth or so. I like to keep enough to protect the floor from moisture, but not so much its expensive to replace.
