My buff orpington broody hatched two pullets and a cockerel in late September of 2009.

The cockerel has been rehomed, but the two pullets have been merged into an existing group of six other hens and their rooster father, DaddyRoo.

Now 20 weeks old, this afternoon one of the two pullets laid her very first egg!

That egg, which is 1 and 1/8 ounces in weight, is the first egg we have ever gotten from a chicken that we hatched ourselves at our own place. I was there when this little egg's momma was hatched, and I was there when this little egg was laid.

We will not try to hatch this egg -- it's way too small, and anyway, the buff orpington who does all the brooding around here is not interested in brooding right now.

I guess I'll scramble it in the morning. AFTER I take a dozen digital photos of it!
