I’ve been raising small flocks in my north-central Texas backyard since 2008. I prefer the Buff Orpington breed for their eggs and temperament. I bought two fertilized eggs for my broody hen, Agate – she’s a great momma: they’re due to hatch 7/17!

Currently I have one black Australorp, Billie, two Buffs Agate and Topaz and one juvenile white Leghorn mix, Pearl. We have a pair of redtail hawks cruising the property, so we have erected an 8’X40’ run to help protect the chickens after a hawk got Target, one of my chicks.

I enjoy gardening and let nature choose my flowers on my 1.5-acre homestead. This year 10’ tall sunflowers prevailed. We have several different fruit trees, and in my garden, I grow Beef Steak tomatoes, Pecos cantaloupe, Dew berries, sweet potatoes, green beans, Brussels sprouts, pumpkin, watermelon, yellow squash, and cabbage.

Honey is retired Navy, and we enjoy sharing country life with our three children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren – and their dogs.

We have a four-year-old brindled Tennessee Tree climber named Athena. She scours the trees when I tell her to “watch for hawks.” We also adopted a fourteen-year-old red Australian Shepherd from a friend who passed away two years ago. Duke is almost blind, mostly deaf and is a grouchy old man who eats like tomorrow might not happen.
