Ooo 2 Brits! Or a Brit and an Irish person. Anyways, I had a question to pose. I got to hang with my oldest daughter over the weekend. She's 13, and a self proclaimed otaku. Here's my conundrum. She claims that Hunter x Hunter is not only better than Naruto, but that Naruto somehow ripped off some key story elements of Hunter x Hunter. I have been mostly keeping up with Naruto since it started broadcast in 2002. I didn't really watch Hunter x Hunter, so I decided I would so I could gain a connection. I cannot see much in common at all between the two. Not only that, but Naruto started putting out issues a full year before the other, in 1997. Oh, she's my birth daughter; I gave her up when she was born, because I didn't have the means to take care of a baby. But we get to hang out still sometimes, because it's an open adoption. I say they are nothing alike. Who's right?

I can't really help you, because I've only really seen Naruto. :lau But, WELCOME TO THE THREAD! :D

Praise the sun!

No, I should be asleep. I shouldn't stay up all night. I'm supposed to be a mature adult. @-@

It's 4am. All nighter, or sleep while I can? XD

A comment from Reddit:
Hunter x hunter has superior writing and characters IMO (in my opinion). The original naruto isn't bad though. Hunter x hunter is much more cleverly written, has much more deeper and emotional story arcs (not comparing to shippuden), and is a show where things like experience, skill, and knowledge are more important than full on power (chakra and aura in this case). In naruto, whoever had more chakra pretty much won the battle, leading to a crazy power creep in shippuden with characters getting stupidly strong. In HxH we see stupidly strong characters, but we also see weaker characters gain the upper hand on them by outsmarting their opponent. Also, the variety in nen and aura in HxH puts naruto and most other shonen (bar JJBA) to shame. Basically, Nen is much more nuanced than chakra, there are different types of nen manifested in hundreds of different ways that made for very unpredictable fights whereas in naruto it was basically who could make a stronger attack (aka who had more chakra). That's not to say HxH is perfect. I feel as if there are a few arcs in HxH that are very weak, and I don't actually remember as many arcs in the original naruto that were totally weak (weak episodes yes, but entire arcs?). Also, Gons motivations as a protagonist are pretty weak IMO, making him hard to relate to or understand. I get his fixation on being a hunter, but I never really understood why he wants to meet his dad so badly.

By what I read on other comments, Naruto had little thought and effort into their writing and production; so it's pretty simple and is very predictable.
So yeah I think HxH is much better, even if myself is a big Naruto fan.
